Ghost Bridge

Hi, my name is Becky and I was recently at your site just nosing around. And I halfway read the story of "The Witch on the Bridge ". It reminded me of something that had happened to me about 15 years ago (1990) when I was in high school. This story is very true and to me very creepy.

In Clarksville, Tennessee, there used to be what I guess you could call an 'urban legend' about 'Ghost Bridge.'  The story went that no one knew why, but many years ago, a young woman came to and dropped her very young baby off the bridge into the water and then she threw herself off the bridge.  It was said that if you went out to the bridge and stood in the middle of it and listened very closely, you could hear a baby crying.

A with urban legends, there are many different accounts about what people have heard about it, or witnessed themselves.  For 2 years I had heard many stories about things that happened at this bridge, from people seeing devil worshippers out there to finding a witches house right before you reach the bridge; so on and so on.  There were stories of people going onto the bridge and turning to see people walking towards them, then after turning around to run, looking back and seeing no one there.

Being a FIRM believer in ghosts, spirits, and the supernatural, when I got my driver's license I finally got some friends together (I was NOT going by myself) and we headed out there.  I'm not sure of some of the names of the roads, but the start of the ride was somewhat normal looking; just roads in a regular neighborhood. I remember coming to a left turn only at the end of a busy road, where it turned just pitch black.  No houses, no street lights, nothing.  You turn onto this tiny dirt or gravel lane, and there is absolutely nothing on this road for about a mile.  The whole time I was driving, I was thinking to myself, 'Turn around and go home."  I was terrified.

Finally, we saw single house all by itself on the right. It was an old dirty dark house. where it was said the witch lived. As soon as we were in front of this house I saw a dead dog laying almost in the road, but I didn't think anythig about it.  The bridge was about 500 feet past the house.  It's a short bridge and not very high, and I thought to myself, 'how could anyone die from jumping off it.'  One of my friends told me to stop, to not park on the bridge under any circumstances.  I didn't listen to her.  I wanted my car right there with me so I could get back in it quickly if I needed to for any reason.  I sat there in my car, clutching the steering wheel, my eyes closed, almost hyperventilating as I tried to get up the courage to get out.

You have to understand it was a very strange environment; something weird came over you quickly out there.  I finally got my courage up to open my eyes, and I saw the same dead dog that had been on the side of the road standing directly in front of my car, looking like it was possessed or something.  I started screaming, honking my horn and flashing my lights.  As quickly as it appeared, it disappeared.

I had to work up my courage again.  When I got out of the car, there wasn't a sound to be heard except our breathing and the rippling of the water under the bridge.  I took my time going to the side of the bridge, and then I just stood there for about 2 minutes with my eyes closed, holding my friends' hand.  Away in the background I could hear a baby crying, then a faint thump, then about a minute later I heard a short faint scream.

As I stood there, it felt as if someone were standing very close to me on the opposite side of my friend.  I was frozen in fear.  All I could do was stand there, hearing the same sounds over and over.  A baby's cry, a thump, then a scream.

That is my story.  Nothing embellished or false.  Sitting here typing this gave me chills all over again...

-Becky.
