SPECIAL MENTION

Tempting Evil
The year was 1976 and my place of residence Pittsburgh. I was playing in a Rock
& Roll band and sharing an apartment with a band-mate. Life was interesting but
normal; both of us could be described as semi-religious people, I note this
because of what was soon to come.
In June of that year my friend happened upon a book titled “The Witches Bible”.
A girl he was dating gave it to us and I do remember her saying she was a
witch. One thing that stands out in my memory is her statement that if we took
the book, we were taking it of our own free will. She then added the only way
to cancel the power that came with it was for someone else to willingly take it
from us. We thought it was a big joke and over the next few months delved
deeper into the occult, not as practitioners mind you, merely as inquisitive
observers. Without even realizing it we had the beginnings of a library
containing dark lore sitting on the shelf. This turned out to be a mistake as
strange things were happening around us. Items would disappear or be found in
odd places, unexplained noises and odd odors occurred at various times and with
increasing frequency, add to that the fact the apartment had taken on an
entirely different, almost dark feel. It became clear that we had opened an
ethereal doorway to…somewhere. Discussing the matter we decided to get rid of
the book.
A short time later I mentioned some of the things described above to another
friend. After telling him that we were going to dispose of the compendium, I
was a bit surprised when asked if he might have it. I reiterated to him what
the girl had said about willingly taking what came along with the book, he
chuckled and said he could handle it. Did he believe me? I’m not sure, but I
had warned him and my conscience was clear. He walked out the door with it
under his arm.
Immediately things got better for us, the strange happenings ceased and the evil
presence appeared to have departed. A month or so later I ran into that friend
and asked him if he still had the book, he answered with one word. “No!” He
would not talk about anything that happened to him while it was in his
possession. The only thing he would say was that the garbage collector had
willingly taken the vile thing off of his hands.
Note: During this time a few more things that happened to me, but they are
stories in and of themselves.
