SPECIAL MENTION
URBAN LEGENDS
Your site asked for eye witness accounts of urban legends in the making.
I'm not sure if this will qualify, but you might find it enjoyable.
I lived in Grove City, Ohio about 4 years ago
(2000). At this time my nieces
lived 2 doors down from us, and I got them on the school bus each morning. The
bus stopped at an empty lot to pick up the children. We also walked by this lot
6 or 7 times a week, on our way to a convenience store. My nieces were 5, 9 & 13,
while my sons were 11 & 13.
One day the 5yr old asked me about the lot. Out of the clear blue sky, I
just started making up a story about a house burning down, arson, ghosts of the
victims seeking justice. Same stuff you hear all the time. Very standard.
We went over and looked at the remains of the foundation, and some cement
stairs to no where, and I kept adding to the story. We were having a pretty good
time, a harmless scare is always fun, when my 13yr old started saying "this is
stupid" and "there's no such thing as ghosts".
I really hate that.
I had to have proof, and fast so I told them that there was a way for the
ghosts on the lot to let you feel there presence. All they had to do was hold
there arms out strait with the palms down, and they would be able to "feel" the
ghosts vibrations.
Of course it worked. Once you start paying attention to your palms you
realize you hardly ever really take the time to feel any thing with them. There
we all were, walking around an empty lot, palms down, acting like a bunch of
nuts. The next day it spread to ALL the kids on the bus, and it went even
farther at our Halloween party.
What makes this an urban legend instead of a children's amusement? The
story is still going around! Now it's in Urban Crest, Urban Hollow, and
Columbus. It was featured in a neighborhood shoppers ghost for Halloween section
this week.
Of course the story has grown considerably since it began. Now there are 4
different lots, depending on where you live, but it's the same story. Enough of
the particulars have remained the same to easily recognizable. The hands,
stairs, roses that wont die, arson and need for justice/revenge are all still
there.
So if you find this story in your e mails you now know it's an urban
legend. Let me know if you've already seen it or have any questions.
