READERS TALES
The Laughing Boy
It was roughly November 1990 and I was about 11 yrs old. My friend S. and I used
to build tree-houses back then as we lived out in the country surrounded by open
land and woods. I lived in Ayrshire, Scotland in the UK.
S. and I
had built a tree-house in the summer time about July and we went to the
tree-house most nights to play cards and listen to airplanes and boats on a
scanner. It was 13 November, 1990. We had just finished school and decided
to go to the tree-house about 4.30pm before it got dark. We played a few games
of cards and read some comics until 7pm, then we decided to go home as it was
very dark.
We started
to walk back and we had to pass through some woods to get home when S. and I
could hear some noises coming from the bushes. Both of us thought it was only a
fox until a little dog ran out from the bushes and we were relieved. But about
10 seconds later, a little boy ran from the bushes and stopped dead ahead of us
and just stared at me and S.. S. and I froze with fear and then the little boy
started laughing at us at a very high pitched voice. It didn’t sound real and
the boy kept laughing for about 5-10 minutes, then suddenly stopped and stared
at us again, and then just vanished.
There was
a dead silence afterwards and S. and I got some courage to run home as fast as
we could. We were still in shock a few days later and eventually decided to find
out about the boy. We went to the local library and did some research and found
what we were looking for. We found an old newspaper dated back to 13 November
1952 and the main headline was “ Local farmer accidentally shoots boy!” and the
sub-story said “Young Matthew was out walking his dog in the woods when the
local farmer accidentally shot him thinking he was a fox in the bushes, and all
the boy could do lying on the floor was stare the farmer straight in the eyes
and laugh loudly at him, then he slowly died”.
I still
get nightmares to this day just thinking about the boy staring at me and
laughing.
