Jimmy

(NOTE:  This event occurred in 1969, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.)

My Dad's brother Jimmy died in a violent car crash at the age of 21 about a month or two after I was born. He was so young and kind and handsome and had such a bright future, that this was a devastating blow to everyone in the family. My Mom often said he was the only relative of my Dad's that she was truly comfortable with and she felt a real bond with Jimmy. A week or so after he was killed, she was at home and had just put me, my brother and sister down for a nap. She went into the living room for some peace and quiet. She admits Jimmy was heavy on her mind at the time. She looked over at a rocking chair in our living room and saw Jimmy sitting there, smiling at her. For the first few seconds, her brain didn't process that he was dead and *couldn't* be sitting in front of her. As she realized she was seeing something amazing, she said she closed her eyes and shook her head to clear it, to see if she was just seeing things. When she opened her eyes and looked again, he was gone, but the chair was rocking noticeably, as if someone had just gotten out of it. As she thought over the experience, she realized he had a smile on his face, and she felt he came to let her know that he was OK, and she shouldn't be so sad. And she said it worked too! She felt reassured that he was at peace.
