READERS TALES

Ghosts or Overactive Imagination?

These stories take place in Las Vegas, NV between March and August of 2004. I've been renting this house since the beginning of March. It was around 9pm and my boyfriend and I were sitting in our bedroom watching TV. J was sitting on the bed. I was sitting on the floor petting my American Eskimo dog, Annabelle. My other dog, who is an 8 month old chow, Luke, was laying behind me facing the bathroom. I was telling J about some of the stories that I've read on this website over the past week. I started looking into paranormal instances after watching the new exorcist movie the previous weekend. All of a sudden Luke is standing up behind me "coughing". At first I thought he was getting sick. I was just about to grab him to put him outside when I noticed that his "coughing" was something he does when he sees something he's never seen before (usually a person). When he sees someone he's never seen before he starts "coughing" and backing away from them. The "coughing" turns into growling and the growling turns into his "stay away from me" bark. We continued to watch him. He would cough and then head for the bathroom door and look up. The he would back up really fast. The it would start all over. He did this about 3 times (all the while shaking his head in a "no" gesture, that he does when he thinks he's in trouble) and then it just stopped. J grabbed him and set him by the bathroom door. Luke just walked away like nothing happened. Then J grabbed him again and actually set him in the bathroom. Luke, again, just walked out like nothing. He went a got his chew toy and went to work on that.

I just thought this was a strange thing to happen, especially after reading all of these stories this
week.

This incident made me think of a couple of times that Annabelle did something similar. My mother, who is disabled and lives with me, was in the hospital on these two occasions. It was just me and my son (I didn't have Luke yet). In the living room there are two doors. One is the front door and the other leads out onto a small patio type area that is surrounded by walls as high as the house. The only way to get out there is by coming through the house to that door. One night I'm in my bedroom with C and I hear Annabelle barking in the living room. That kind of freaks me out since it's just me and C. We'd only lived in the house for a month or so and I was not entirely comfortable there yet. I slowly made my way out to the living room to see what she was barking at. She was standing by the door to the patio just barking up a storm. I yelled at her and told her to stop. She looked back at me and then back at the door where she continued to bark. It was very dark out there, but if an actual person were there, I would have seen them. There is no place to hide back there. I eventually got her to follow me back to my room where we slept with the door closed and locked.

Another time (still before Luke & when my mother was in the hospital again), we (Annabelle and I) were in my bedroom. It was the middle of the afternoon. My bedroom has the back door in it as well as a window. Our yard is completely surrounded by a cinder block wall (which also separates us from both of our neighbors). I was cleaning the bathroom when I hear Annabelle barking. I look to see what she is barking at. She is standing a few feet away from the window. I look out there and I don't see anything. She still persists. So I go out the back door and look. Nothing is there. By the time that I came back in she had stopped.

At the time of both of those instances I was a little freaked out, probably just because it was a new house and I was alone. I thought about both of those times and came to the conclusion that Annabelle was just barking at a reflection or something. The same could be said for Luke. He could have seen some reflection in the mirror from the TV or something. Who knows. I just thought it strange, especially after all of the stories that I've read over the past week.

I can honestly say that I hope I never see anything that has been described by the other readers in their stories. If it is true that ghosts and entities feed off of peoples fear of them, well they could feed off of me forever!
