READERS TALES
Fred the
Friendly Ghost
From 1993-1998 (Sidney, Australia)
I had a resident spirit in my house. The first encounter I had
with it was the feeling that I was not alone, if everyone else in the house was
out or asleep I would always feel that there was a presence watching me.
I lived
with my parents and brother, and no one else ever encountered him, but they did
mention that sometimes they heard footsteps in the hallway.
At first I was quite
uneasy, but as time went on I began to feel more comfortable with this spirit.
I
had the feeling it was a male so I gave him the name Fred. He would be with me
when I watched TV. It
was actually quite comforting having him around when I was alone;
he gave off a very strong sense of protectiveness. I
felt as though nothing would or could harm me when he was there.
My dogs didn't take too kindly
to his presence though, they would bark and stare at the armchair where I
assumed Fred was sitting. He was a quiet ghost, his presence was constant when I
was alone and the only thing he ever really did was turn my stereo off every
night after I had fallen asleep. I used to listen to music when I went to bed
and without fail every morning the stereo was turned off completely.
I started
dating a man which meant that I was not often home, a fact I don't think Fred
liked. When I would come home from seeing this guy Fred would become quite the
pain. He would turn lights back on after I had just turned them out ready for
bed, making me go all the way back to the kitchen to turn them off; this would
happen about 2 or 3 times on each occasion. Then I would get angry and say
sternly "Stop it, Fred!"
and strangely enough it would stop.
One night while sitting
in my bedroom, a picture of my boyfriend flew off the desk, across my room, hit
the wall and smashed the glass. I assume this was Fred's doing. I don't think he
liked the guy I was dating. How right he was, this guy turned out to be huge
trouble. When I finally left him, Fred left too. Fred came into my life a couple
of months before I started dating this guy and when we were through, Fred was
gone. As far as I'm concerned he was my guardian angel, trying to warn me that I
was making a mistake.
Thanks, Fred. I'm now happily married and there has been no
sign of him, so I guess my husband has Fred's blessing.
