Reincarnation - a Personal View
One of the most hotly debated
topics I've seen people engage in through the years
has been the discussion of reincarnation. My
brother-in-law is an adamant believer in the view that when we die, we DIE.
There's none of this crap of coming back, of going to Heaven or Hell, etc. I
tend to let him rant and rave when he goes off on this--some people haven't
the slightest interest in debate--it's their way and that's that. Anyone who
disagrees or has a different viewpoint is a fool, an idiot, cannot possibly
know what they are talking about, etc. It's probably no surprise to you when
I tell you that I see my brother in law as seldom as possible...
I am a believer
in reincarnation. I believe that while our bodies die, our spirits do not.
In my personal experience, there is too much evidence to support the theory
that reincarnation does occur. I've read many articles and accounts of people
who can recall their past lives, can recognize people they knew before, and
who can even remember how they died! People who suffer from crippling phobias
have been known to be cured when they go through past-life regression. Once
it's understood that the reason you are afraid of water is because you DROWNED
in your prior life, the unreasoning fear of seeing water vanishes. You may
never swim in it, or sit in a rowboat, but you're no longer unable to function
when you are near it.
Another reason I believe in
reincarnation is because of my best friend. I am CONVINCED that as I know her
now, I knew her before, and I will know her again... the first time I saw her,
I was 5 years old, and it was the first day of school. There were all these
kids outside, on the monkey bars, etc., shouting and playing and running
around. I saw her standing at the crossbars, and I walked past all these
other kids, ignoring them, until I stood in front of her. I pointed at her,
and said, "THERE you are." We have been best friends ever since, going on 38
years! I should add that she does not share this memory, and does not believe
in reincarnation... but I can still hear all those other kids, feel the
sunlight, and see her face, as clearly as if it happened yesterday... she does
not argue with me when I mention this incident, by the way, even though she
does not agree that it happened...we have agreed to disagree.
I believe that reincarnation
is a way for our souls to reach perfection. Every time we come back, it is to
learn the soul lessons we failed to grasp in our past lives. We're not
supposed to remember our former lives, but some people have
the ability to recall some of it, with or without help. If we had issues with
other people and we didn't work them out, then we meet those people again.
It's also true with people we were close to--we get to have them with us
again, but they more than likely have a different role in our life than they
did before. My best friend may have been my brother, or my daughter, or,
perhaps, just my best friend!
I've also read accounts of
children who remembered their former lives so well, that they begged to be
returned to those lives. Without ever having been there, they were able to
describe where they used to live, the outlay of the house, family members,
their names, pets they had had, their former occupations, and even their
deaths. In most cases, the reincarnated child had the same scars their former
body did, or the same mannerisms. When taken to their former homes, they
would call former family members and friends by name, and describe events they
had shared with those people. In the end, EVERYONE believed the child was
indeed, back from the dead...
Do you believe in
reincarnation? I can't imagine that we do not come back. I can't imagine
that I won't know my best friend again, that we don't get another chance to
correct our mistakes, to further enlighten our spirit, our souls, that when we
die, we DIE...
