This true story occurred in
my hometown of Madison, WI. It was sometime during
the summer of '96, between the hours of Midnight and 2:00 in the morning. Iwas outside with a friend of mine roaming the streets and just being
restlessteenagers. We eventually wandered to Vilas
Park which was only a few blocksaway from my
friend's house. We were walking across a large grass field whensomething on the other side caught the corner of my eye. I was being
watchedby someone or something. It was in the shape
of a human being, but it lookedcloudy and
distorted. The closest thing I could compare it to is thecamouflage used bythe alien in the movie
Predator. It was just standingthere perfectly
still. I staredright back at it, not afraid, just
curious.
Then suddenly it took off running as fast as someone who's life was indanger. Itran over a small hill and
disappeared from my eyesight. I asked myfriend if
he saw anything and he said no. I shook it off and went on withlife. Sometime afterwards,I found out that
the entire area surrounding VilasPark was built on
an Indian burial ground. I've also heard stories of
scalpings and beings similar to the one I described that appear and disappearwithout a trace. I don't know if the scalpings were true or not, but I
knowwhat I saw, or rather I didn't know what I saw.
Another thing that confirmsmy belief that something
odd is going on there was something that happened
about two years after my experience with whatever it was that was looking atme. One night I was driving by the Vilas Park shelter with a friend andsomeone I had just met. The young man who I just met pointed at the
shelterand claimed that it was haunted. When I was
about 10 years old, before any ofthis, I had a
horrible nightmare of the same shelter. I had barely escapedwith my life in the dream. But I only remember a dark force and nothingspecific, and maybe for the better. I mentioned having the nightmare to
myfriend and acquaintance. My friend said he also
had a nightmare of the sameshelter but didn't go
into specifics. I have heard that Indian spirits are
very protective of their burial grounds. They are restless because someonedecided to build a city on their old land.
