Indian Burial Grounds

This true story occurred in my hometown of Madison, WI. It was sometime during the summer of '96, between the hours of Midnight and 2:00 in the morning. I was outside with a friend of mine roaming the streets and just being restless teenagers. We eventually wandered to Vilas Park which was only a few blocks away from my friend's house. We were walking across a large grass field when something on the other side caught the corner of my eye. I was being watched by someone or something. It was in the shape of a human being, but it looked cloudy and distorted. The closest thing I could compare it to is the camouflage used by the alien in the movie Predator. It was just standing there perfectly still. I stared right back at it, not afraid, just curious.

Then suddenly it took off running as fast as someone who's life was in danger. It ran over a small hill and disappeared from my eyesight. I asked my friend if he saw anything and he said no. I shook it off and went on with life. Sometime afterwards, I found out that the entire area surrounding Vilas Park was built on an Indian burial ground. I've also heard stories of scalpings and beings similar to the one I described that appear and disappear without a trace. I don't know if the scalpings were true or not, but I know what I saw, or rather I didn't know what I saw.

Another thing that confirms my belief that something odd is going on there was something that happened about two years after my experience with whatever it was that was looking at me. One night I was driving by the Vilas Park shelter with a friend and someone I had just met. The young man who I just met pointed at the shelter and claimed that it was haunted. When I was about 10 years old, before any of this, I had a horrible nightmare of the same shelter. I had barely escaped with my life in the dream. But I only remember a dark force and nothing specific, and maybe for the better. I mentioned having the nightmare to my friend and acquaintance. My friend said he also had a nightmare of the same shelter but didn't go into specifics. I have heard that Indian spirits are very protective of their burial grounds. They are restless because someone decided to build a city on their old land.
